Q&A With BTTC Driver and Team Halfords New Boy Tom 'Sonic' Chilton

Tom, being a racing driver is every boy's dream, how did you make it a reality?

I passed my National B racing car license at 13yrs old! Worked hard at learning as much as I could from a young age and to be as fit as I could to succeed in the world of Motor racing. I was that little boy once!!!

You've been racing British Touring Cars for 7 years - talk us through some of your racing highs during that time?

My biggest high has got to be my double back to back Wins at Snetterton in 2005. Then out qualifying my two team mates (Alain Menu and Fabrizio Giovanardi) in the same car at the end of last year at the famous high speed circuit at Thruxton.

Joining Team Halfords and racing alongside Flash (Gordon ‘Flash’ Shedden), what do you think you can bring to the team?

My experience. It’s not something you can buy but only a feeling you build up over time. Racing is more than just the race, it’s how involved are you in the design and testing of the Team Halfords cars, and that’s why Team Halfords' Hondas have the edge this season.

That orange colour is making the car very fast. My test last week in Spain went very well. I worked very closely with the Team to achieve the goal we all want. More speed. The engineers have blown me away with their vast knowledge and people skills. People make companies not companies make companies!!!

The wheels used on your cars are Team Dynamics Racing Pro Race. Tell us about your competition wheels and what makes them so technically superior?

For performance we need lighter stronger wheels, they give you better acceleration, better braking and better handling, they are another critical part in the big jigsaw of a car’s performance.

About 10 years ago Rimstock, the manufacturing company behind Team Dynamics, developed with the aid of Birmingham University an alloy to enable them to produce ultra lightweight motorbike wheels. Having developed this they turned their attention to use in making car wheels and in the process managed to achieve ultra light weight with increased strength, perfect for the motorsport arena.
